Guilty proven Maoist leader Dhungel arrested

Kathmandu:  CPN-Maoist Centre leader Bal Krishna Dhungel , who was on the run, has finally been arrested by the Nepal Police Tuesday.

A special squad deployed from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police detained him this morning, Police Headquarters, Naxal high level sources said.

Though the Nepal Police Headquarters spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manoj Neupane is yet to confirm the arrest, sources close to the CIB and Headquarters said the so.

On this regard when this online made a telephone call to the CIB spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Jeevan Kumar Shrestha, his mobile phone was switched off.  Some officers denied confirming the arrest citing that the senior officers were on the meeting to discuss on the matter.

The District Court of Okhaldhunga had convicted him guilty in the murder of Ujjan Kumar Shrestha in 2061 BS and the same verdict of the District court was also approved by the Supreme Court in 2066 B.S.

Sources said that he was arrested from Satdobato, Lalitpur. The SC had issued order against the Police Headquarters to arrest and present him to the Court. But the Headquarters citing that he was on absconding list, had not been showing interest against his arrest.

Dhungel under political cover, however, had been roaming in around the valley. During this Dashain festival, he was seen in the party meeting of left-alliance while finalizing the candidate names for the coming up elections of the House of Representatives and the State Assemblies.

The SC had ordered to arrest Dhungel six months ago to the Nepal Police IGP Prakash Aryal. But later, when the Headquarters did not abide by the SC’s order, the SC again had filed a contempt of court against IGP Aryal on Kartik 7, 2074.

The contempt of court charge was filed against Aryal by senior lawyer Dinesh Tripathy.

Dhungel was former lawmaker elected from Okhaldhunga-2 in 2064 and the District Court of Okhaldhunga and SC had issued arrest warrant and found guilty when he was lawmaker during the time.

Deceased Ujjan Shrestha’s elder sister Sabitra had filed murder charge sheet against Dhungel at the District Court of Okhaldhunga. Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai had even recommend his name for excuse to the President Bidya Devi Bhadari citing the case was against the norms of Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA).

The family sources said the incident was of around 11:00 am Tuesday. He went out from the room at Satdobato citing to meet his friends. But there just an outside of his room, four-five members wearing civil dress had rounded him up and asked to move with them at the Police Headquarters.

Dhungel, a kidney patient, had been undergoing medical treatment in Sumeru Hospital, Lalitpur in the time interval, family sources said.

Though the CPN-Maoist Centre had yet officially not said anything about this incident, some Maoist leaders have termed the incident as breach of CPA and against the norms of peace and reconciliation.
